Anche se le 117 locomotive BR 98.8 e 98.8-9 erano in servizio da anni rispettando le attese, le DRG pensarono ad una nuova
e simile locomotiva, soprattutto più veloce che avrebbe potuto rimpiazzarle su determinate linee locali.

Nel 1929 l’industria Krauss ricevette l’ordinazione di sviluppare una nuova BR 98 da impiegare su linee secondarie
con l’aggiunta di un asse portante posteriore con rodiggio D1’, la locomotiva risultò anche più pesante: 54.4 ton.

Le prime 5 macchine, classificate BR 98.10 (1001-1005) vennero consegnate del corso del 1929, seguirono 6 unità nel 1930
e 10 unità 1931.

Krauss-Maffei, dopo la fusione delle 2 industrie avvenuta nel 1931, costruì altre 24 locomotive suddivise in 2 serie da 12 unità,
portando il totale a 45 macchine (1001-1045).

Tutte le 45 locomotive prestarono servizio in Baviera fino al 1957.

Nel 1966 le ultime 5 macchine vennero accantonate: 98 1005-1011-1027 a Schwandorf, 98 1025-1026 a Lindau.
